Quilts for Kids, Inc. transforms discontinued and unwanted fabrics into quilts that comfort children in need. These children are fighting a life battle with cancer, AIDS, and serious illnesses as well as battered & abused children. Our goal is to link design centers and other fabric sources nationwide to their communities, so that children in need in those regions may be served.
This quilting ministry was born in my heart after the loss of a very close and personal friend of mine, Stephanie Silcox Howell. Stephanie was raised here in Baton Rouge and later moved to Fayetteville, TN. with her family. She was diagnosed in July of 2008 with cervical cancer after finding out that she was pregnant with her third child. She had been carrying twins and lost one before finding out about the cancer. She chose to carry her remaining child, John Samuel Howell. She started her treatment right away and had chemo through out the remainder of her pregnancy. After the birth of her son, she had massive amounts of radiation treatments. Her life, was beginning to look good and she was feeling better each day. While on a visit to see her in May of 2009, we learned the cancer had come back, and this time it was in her lungs. Her faith was strong as was her witness of God's Grace and His Mercy. If you talked to her she was happy telling everyone about her miracle baby. I noticed she had a beautiful quilt on her bed and I asked her mother about the quilt. I was told it was a prayer quilt made especially for Stephanie. After her death in July 2009, I really felt the Lord was leading me to give back to the community she was raised in. This quilting ministry is that calling. I pray that this quilting ministry will grow to become a legacy of her life.
